There are certain conditions or situations in which colon hydrotherapy is not recommended. Through consultation, the colon hydrotherapist will address any concerns. In most cases of potential contraindication it is recommended that you speak with your physician prior to completing you session as it is often acceptable to proceed with the procedure with approval.
Contraindications to Colon hydrotherapy include: abdominal hernias, any cardiac conditions, C-section (within 12 months), surgery, or abnormal distention; acute liver failure or dialysis; anemia; aneurysms; carcinoma of the colon; Crohns Disease and Colitis; Diverticulitis or Diverticulitis; Fissures and Fistulas; Gallstones; Hemorrhaging; Hemorrhoidectomy; Intestinal Perforations; Lupus; Rectal or Colon Surgery; Renal Insufficiency; ingestion of medications which weaken the intestinal wall; and pregnancy.
Contraindication Definition: A condition or symptom that makes a particular treatment or procedure in-advisable. Most contraindications will require a doctor’s approval for Colon Hydrotherapy and other contraindications rule out the possibility of receiving the treatment completely.

People receive colon hydrotherapy for a variety of personal and holistic wellness reasons. Some of the most common benefits of colon hydrotherapy are ridding the body of excess waste material. Toxins from this waste buildup re-enter and circulate in the blood stream leaving an individual feeling ill, tired or weak. Impacted materials impair the colons ability to assimilate minerals and good bacteria. Additionally, a buildup of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements and constipation. The colon is an important organ of elimination and vital in detoxifying the body as a whole.

Each individual may experience slightly different reactions physically. The level of toxins an individual carries is based upon a variety of factors both internal and external. Once situated on the device, a session lasts anywhere from 35 to 60 minutes. Each session is adjusted to the individual and the duration is ultimately determined by the body. It is recommended the client be prepared to spend 90 to 120 minutes at the center on their first visit to ensure enough time for a thorough consultation, history taking , and a question and answer session.

Most commonly, people do not describe colon hydrotherapy as painful. An individual may experience cramping or nausea associated with toxic releases, however these symptoms pass quickly. Clients are provided with a warm flax seed bag to place upon the abdomen that helps to eliminate or alleviate any associated cramping that could be experienced. Most often people will describe feeling refreshed, revived and full of energy once they have completed the session.

Following a colon hydrotherapy session you may carry on your daily activities. However, it is important you follow the directions and recommendations of your therapists; allowing your body enough time to drain completely of excess water. Once the colon rids itself of excess water, most people report feeling energized and lighter.

Following your session you may eat meals as your body prescribes. Some individuals experience hunger afterwards. You may eat as closely following your session choosing whatever foods you wish. However, it is encouraged you choose a lighter diet for the next 24 hours. This diet consists of foods such as soups, broths, cooked vegetables, and fruits or juices. After that initial 24 hours it is appropriate to start reintroducing lean proteins such as chicken, fish and eggs back into the diet. Immediately following the colon hydrotherapy session, the colon does not need excess fiber rich foods so cooked vegetables are often preferred over raw vegetables.

The colon hydrotherapy session is fairly low maintenance with little required preparation. It is recommended that you avoid eating two hours prior to the appointment time. This allows for the majority of previously consumed food to pass from the stomach to the small intestines, where the excess pressure on the abdomen will no longer create nausea or discomfort.

The one time use, sterile, self-inserted rectal nozzle is approximately the size of a pencil. Each client is given specific instructions on methods to insert the nozzle gently and effectively. With the ergonomic design of the nozzle, it is only necessary to insert approximately 1” to 1.5” to complete the session.

The Colon Hydrotherapy session will clean and cleanse the entire five feet of the large intestines through water integration that softens and releases build up on the intestinal wall. Traditional enemas will only clean the lower portion of the colon including the descending and sigmoid colon regions. Laxatives often encourage muscular contractions which help the body to eliminate waste, but do not soften or effectively remove build up from the intestinal wall.

Each person will experience a different result from an individual colon hydrotherapy session or a group of sessions. The Colon Hydrotherapist will make recommendations regarding follow up sessions based on the results from the initial session and each clients self reported goals.

The Naturopathic approach recommends two sessions on back-to-back days, followed by a week long break and ending with two more back-to-back days of sessions. Following this initial detoxification one session per week is recommended for following eight weeks. This consists of a total of 12 sessions over ten weeks.

Though an increase in water intake will keep the body hydrated as necessary, it likely will not produce the over hydration necessary for the desired result of waste buildup elimination. As an example, if excess water intake produced the same result then we would find physicians prescribing it as preparation for Colonoscopy procedures rather than prescribing a drinkable substance to result in the complete cleansing of the colon.
